(SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Spezza makes his first return trip to Ottawa in a Dallas Stars sweater on Thursday night as his new club takes on the Senators hoping to avoid a third straight loss. The 31-year-old Spezza was the second overall pick by the Senators franchise in 2001 and he compiled 687 points (251 goals, 436 assists) over 686 games and 11 seasons with the club. Spezza served as Ottawas captain last season, but requested a trade last spring and was dealt to Dallas on July 1 along with prospect Ludwig Karlsson, while Ottawa received forwards Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptill, Nicolas Paul and a second-round pick in 2015. In his first season with the Stars, Spezza has posted eight goals and 27 assists while ranking third on the club with 35 points. He inked a four-year extension with Dallas in November. It felt to be good back on the ice. This day has been circled on my calendar, so its nice to have it now and to get it over with (Thursday), Spezza said on Dallas website. It didnt feel different. It brought back some memories, but (Thursday) is when it will be different being on the other side. It wont be Spezzas first time facing the Senators since the trade as the Stars picked up a 5-4 home victory over Ottawa on Jan. 13. The Sens led 3-1 after the first period, but the Stars netted four goals in the second frame. Spezza did not record a point in Dallas sixth straight victory over Ottawa. The Stars have lost seven of their past 10 (3-5-2) overall as they came out of the All-Star break with a 3-2 setback on Tuesday to the Montreal Canadiens, who got 40 saves from Carey Price. Jamie Benn scored for Dallas and assisted on a goal by Patrick Eaves, who returned to the lineup after missing 21 straight with a broken foot. Kari Lehtonen made 23 saves. We had a lot of shots, and the opportunities were there, Seguin said. Carey made some great saves tonight. Hes one of the best goalies in the league. Forwards Erik Cole and Brett Ritchie both missed the game with injuries, but practiced on Wednesday and are questionable to return tonight. Lehtonen, meanwhile, is 8-5-0 lifetime versus the Senators with a 2.86 goals against average and .909 save percentage in 16 games (13 meetings). Ottawa has been out of action since last Wednesdays 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Sens had lost three of four going in, but got a pair of goals from defenseman Erik Karlsson. Mike Hoffman posted a goal and an assist as he is tied for the NHL lead among rookies with 16 goals, while Mika Zibanejad also lit the lamp. Craig Anderson made 37 saves in the win. It was a big win for us, said Anderson. We make sure the fans get everything they pay for when we make it close at the end. Robin Lehner is expected to get the start tonight and he is winless versus the Stars, going 0-2-1 with a 3.98 GAA and .893 save percentage in three games with two starts. The Jays responded to the three-spot Detroit placed on Casey Janssen the evening before with an attack on the Tigers Achilles Heel, its bullpen, tying the game in the ninth and winning the game in the 10th. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Bills have not discussed their search to replace Doug Marrone, who stepped down abruptly Dec. 31.The offer came a day after the Bills identified Ryan as a finalist and met with him for a second time in South Florida, where new owners Terry and Kim Pegula live. Ryan was one of 12 candidates to interview for the job since last weekend.Ryan was chosen ahead of other notable candidates, including two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan, Cincinnati offensive co-ordinator Hue Jackson and former Bills backup quarterback Frank Reich, who completed his first season as San Diegos offensive co-ordinator.At the same time, a second person familiar with the talks told the AP the Bills are negotiating to hire Greg Roman as offensive co-ordinator. Roman, a finalist for the Bills coaching job, spent the past four years as the San Francisco 49ers offensive co-ordinator. Romans future is uncertain in San Francisco after coach Jim Harbaugh left to coach Michigan.Roman is regarded as a good fit under Ryan, because the two share a similar run-first philosophy. The 49ers running attack ranked among the NFLs top 10 in each of the past four seasons under Roman. The Bills are coming off a 9-7 finish, matching their best record in a decade, but missed the playoffs to extend the NFLs longest active drought to 15 years.Marrones departure caught the Bills by surprise, when the second-year coach quit the team by using an opt-out clause in his contract.Marrone, coincidentally, has interviewed with the Jets, where he previously served as the teams offensive line coach. The Bills prepare to become the first of six NFL teams, including Ryans former team, to fill their coaching vacancy this off-season.Bills players were already expressing their support for Ryan in posts made on their Twitter accounts.Love the hire! centre Eric Wood tweeted.Running back Fred Jackson wrote: Excited about the hire of Rex!! Great coach to come in and keep us moving in the right direction!Ryan prepares to make the cross-staate trip from the Big Apple to Buffalo, where he raises the profile of a franchise now on its sixth coach in 14 years.ddddddddddddKnown for his brash personality and loyalty to his players, Ryan immediately becomes the Bills most high-profile coach since Hall of Famer Marv Levy established his reputation in Buffalo by leading the team to four straight Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990s.Though new to the NFL, Pegulas are not unaccustomed to making a splash. The couple, which also owns the NHL Buffalo Sabres, bought the Bills from the estate of late Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilsons estate for a league-record $1.4 billion in October.Ryan went 50-52, including 4-2 in the playoffs, in six seasons with the Jets before being fired along with general manager John Idzik following a 4-12 finish. He made his biggest impact during his first two seasons in New York, when the Jets reached the AFC Championship game in consecutive years but lost them both.Ryan is familiar with the Bills after coaching their AFC East rival. His father, Buddy, also had ties to Buffalo after spending 1961-65 as the University at Buffalos defensive co-ordinator.Like his father, Rex Ryans strength is defence, which meshes with the Bills. Buffalos defence finished fourth in the NFL in yards allowed last season and produced three Pro Bowl linemen. Its unclear how Ryans arrival would affect the status of Buffalos current defensive co-ordinator Jim Schwartz, who completed his first season with the Bills. Schwartz is the former Detroit Lions coach and was a candidate for the Bills job.Ryans challenge in Buffalo would be similar to the one he had in New York — providing a spark to a sputtering offence. The Jets finished 22nd in yardage last season — four spots ahead of Buffalo.Quarterbacks were concerns for both teams, involving two players drafted in 2013 draft. The Jets faltered behind second-year starter Geno Smith, who was eventually benched and replaced by Michael Vick for three games before finishing out the season. In Buffalo, second-year starter EJ Manuel was benched after four games and replaced by 10-year journeyman Kyle Orton, who has since said he plans to retire.Manuel has two years left on his contract and is the only experienced starter on the roster.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
